Bringing the Hair-Spa Home

By: Aditi Dande, Feme Fashions Bureau | 6 May 2009

With spa treatments gaining immense popularity, many hair experts come up with home based products for hair care, considering many who often prefer to go a little less extravagant.

Who doesn’t like a nice, leisurely pampering session of pure indulgence at the hair spa? The soothing massage, cleansing, conditioning, aroma treatment et al that is typical of hair spa treatments can be pretty tempting, but unfortunately not all can afford a spa treatment. There are numerous options though, and quite inexpensive too, if one wishes to get the spa-fresh, healthy hair.

Many hair experts, along with the expensive and complicated hair care products, also keep some relatively inexpensive, home-based products as well; especially for those looking for natural, less complicated and less extravagant options. La Belle’s skin and hair expert Sana Poonawala shares her secret of reasonably priced fab hair treatments. “Many special hair care treatments are priced as high as even Rs. 1000 and above! But with our special homemade formula of basic oils the best nourishing treatment can cost only between Rs. 250 to Rs. 400. Many women prefer to go for it, particularly those who are super sensitive or do not wish to shell out a lot in the salon,” says Sana.

She shares that her homemade mix of olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, fenugreek (methi) seeds etc is very popular among those going for regular head massages; this mix works wonders for weak, damaged hair. Another quick remedy, costing hardly over a few bucks from your allowance is the hot oil treatment that includes mixing olive oil and boiling water in equal amounts with 4-5 capsules (liquid) of vitamin E. This mixture is massaged well all over the scalp, covered with hot towel for steam and rinsed off after an hour. This is the best treatment for split-ends and dry hair.

Beautician Kajal Parakh shares her experiences with clients going for home based hair care products. She says that 2-3 Tbsps of vinegar and 1-2 tsps of lemon juice mixed with a cup and half of water act as excellent cleansers and remove all the sticky dust and grime for hair. Later the hair is washed well, whilst gently massaging and even the conditioner she uses is home based. Effective and inexpensive conditioners Kajal recommends are – a mix of olive oil and honey; mayonnaise; castor oil and egg yolk and many more that she often experiments. “Many of us are aware of the natural home products that can make a surprisingly wonderful hair spa at home. But the fact that most love is the leisurely pampering they get at the salon; plus, hair expert is well-versed with the amounts of stuff to be used and proper techniques of massage, which makes trying home products at the salon more effective,” she feels.

Fashionista and trend savvy teenager Devayani Kumar, who prefers the simple home products over complex chemical treatments, confesses that she often indulges in these ‘home hair spa’ therapies. “Almost all my friends prefer these treatments! They are easy on the pocket and one doesn’t have to worry about side effects,” she says, also adding that though she can read about these treatments in books and the Internet, visiting a reliable hair expert is much better, as you can relax and not worry about anything going wrong.

These economical hair care treatments are literally a boon, especially for the younger lot who often has to manage with a limited allowance.
