When it comes to getting the perfect look everyday, choosing the right foundation or base even before selecting the other make-up essentials and accessories or outfit to wear, becomes the crucial step.
The market has a wide variety to offer if one decides to look for the right foundation –powder, crème, liquid, stick and now even spray-on – the right foundation for you is available in all kinds! However, better the variety more the confusion whilst picking! Beautician Sharda Karwa of Sharu’s Beauty Salon suggests testing and trying before buying your foundation, which is easier these days when almost all brands offer a tester at their outlets. She also says that it is best to buy all make-up (and not just foundation) from department stores and branded outlets rather than from the pharmacy or general stores, to get the maximum variety and reliable products. “When it comes to daily make-up, the product needs to be in perfect blend with your skin type and complexion, if you wish to keep it subtle and natural. This is when trying before buying comes handy,” she says.
Equally important is selecting the right kind of foundation in order to avoid skin problems. Pune-based make-up and hair expert Sana Poonawala says, “Knowing your skin type is very important. If you are confused, consult your beauty expert to know if your skin is oily, dry or mixed. All you make-up and beauty products should be selected accordingly.” If your skin is oily you need to look for 'oil-free' or 'oil-control' written on the cover. Moisturising foundations, usually liquid or water based products with 'hydrating' or 'moisture-rich' words written on them, are perfect for dry skin. “However, for the mixed skin types, one needs to know whether it’s more oily or dry and pick the product accordingly; usually quick-drying products with sufficient water-content work best for such skin types,” is what Sana suggests. She also adds further, that words like ‘hypo-allergic’ or ‘fragrance-free’ on the product are a must if your skin is super-sensitive and prone to allergies.
Aesthetician, make-up and hair expert Neha Khare of Mirror Salon, while talking about selecting the perfect shade of foundation, suggests that the best way to know if the shade suits you is by applying it in tiny dots on your jaw-line and spreading and blending it with your finger tips; if it makes you look flawless, that’s your shade. “Usually slightly yellowish or beige based shades go with all skin tones and complexions. However, you can take the liberty to pick a slightly pinkish base if you are very fair,” says Neha. She further adds, “Even when trying it at the store, take your time and stand in bright light and look well in the mirror. The best way to select your shade is by trying it on your jaw-line or neck.” Go for foundations with sunscreen if you know will be traveling a lot.
For the daily natural look, however, the foundation needs to be very light and blended perfectly well – a trick that you will better as you do it everyday. With the right shade blended well with your natural complexion, just plain lip-gloss and an eye-pencil would make you a head-turner everyday…even at work, without appearing too flashy.
