What are the costumes like in the movie?
In 'For Real' we took great care to create a realistic look for each character. Sarita Choudhury's character is a singer living in London moves to India to raise a family. As a singer we put her in jeans and bright halter tops with sexy cuts to show the character's zest for life. Later, when the character is losing touch with her art (and thereby losing passion) we have her in oversized khakhis and thick knitted sweaters, in shades of beige and brown. The young actress who plays Sarita's daughter in the film, Zoya Hassan, is the bright light of hope in the film and accordingly has been put in frocks and tights in vibrant prints.
What kind of jewellery is used on the sets?
Sarita as a singer wears gorgeous eye-catching chunky jewelry. Sarita's character as a housewife wears a simple wedding ring, a single solitaire. Besides this, no other jewelry has been used as it would have gone against the characterisation.
What are the special cuts and designs used?
To draw subtle attention to Sarita's character's loss of passion in life, we put her in oversized, heavy knitted sweaters and pants or tunic tops that are one size too big. Juxtaposed to the beautiful vivacious singer who is so confident on the stage in her stringy halter top in bright pink, the change in cuts and design really tell the character's story in a single look.
Any new look given to the actors…
Adil Hussain, who plays Sarita's husband in the film, was given a complete make-over. Adil was last seen in "Ishqiya' as Vidya Balan's husband and will soon be seen in 'Agent Vinod'. We had cut Adil's long curly tresses and put him in smart business suits; this transformation was startling and literally drew gasps. The little girl Zoya Hassan and Sarita Choudhury are, according to me, two sides of the same coin. We gave them both the same haircut. In one scene, when Sarita's character is trying desperately to communicate with her daughter, we gave her similar hair accessory to Shruti's. The links are subtle and influence the audience's perception of the characters on a subliminal level.
What is the most pre-dominant colour used in the film?
The colour green is important to the film. Green is the colour that the little girl imagines her mother to be in. Green is established as the colour of happiness. The little girl is seen often in bright colours and wears a bright green jacket in all out-door sequences. In her fantasies, her mother wears green.
How distinct is the designs from other Bollywood films?
The characters while heavily styled and their costumes hand-picked keeping the character-traits in mind, are dressed in a way that is "everyday". These are not characters that wake up in the morning with full make up.
What type of make-up best suited the actors?
Our lead make-up artist, Rajesh Setia, was a class-apart. He was very proud of his work in 'For Real' he told me that he just knew he would win an award for this film. Unfortunately, he passed away two months after we finished filming. This movie is dedicated to him. He used MAC make-up mainly. He was a perfectionist and to watch him at work was watching an artist chisel away till he reached perfection.
What would you suggest about makeup of actors on sets be used to make it look real and not just makeup?
I wanted Sarita to look very natural. Her startling beauty is such that to show her as a passionless housewife, we had to de-glam her natural look. We mapped her look with great care; even giving dark circles in certain scenes.
Does this movie have a message?
'For Real' is a strong message for responsible parents and guardians of young children, to remind them on just how sensitive and imaginative their kids really are. It is the world seen through the eyes of a child.
How will it change the life of the viewers?
The effect of 'For Real' is that it softens the viewers, reminding them of their humanity and what’s really important - love and family.
