‘Angel Eyes’ or ‘Devil in Disguise’?

By: Aditi Dande, Feme Fashions Bureau | 6 May 2009

Changing your look (drastically), almost every other day is getting as common as any other routine activity for most fashionistas. Cosmetic lenses are just another addition to this trend…

Cosmetic surgeries, high-end designer clothes and accessories, instant weight loss and the likes getting common by the day have taken ‘looking good’ to a whole new level already! The situation some years back, when most had to seek a parental consent before even getting their hair streaked seems to be fantastical now, especially in the times when youngsters don’t think twice before changing their look completely!

Contact lenses that were once considered the best option for optimum vision correction and better aesthetic value compared to the regular glasses or spectacles; have now become a part of the whole ‘looking good’ and dressing up routine, and this might not even come as a surprise to many.

Light eyes have been considered exquisite and a symbol of beauty since times immemorial. But not most in our country are blessed with the exquisite pair, and that’s probably the reason most, especially girls, are driven towards experimenting with their eye colour. These coloured cosmetic lenses that cost over Rs. 2000 some years back have dropped down their prices and have even come up with disposable ones to encourage people to try out more and more colours. “I had bought a gray pair for everyday use. It went well with almost all outfits and my skin tone took it well too. But since they cost a lot then, I couldn’t go for any other colour. However, now I have more options! I’ve bought a honey brown pair and a green one too to go with different occasions,” shares commerce student Priya Watve. She says that she often wears the more natural honey brown lenses for college or formal occasions and saves the bolder colours of gray and green for parties and getting together with friends.

Does gray and green sound wild? Wait till you hear what some other youngsters go for! Optometrist Amruta Joshi shares that these days more people, especially youngsters are picking wild coloured contacts, even though the doctor has not prescribed them vision correction. “The coloured lenses need not be powered. The dropped prices and heightened fashion sense is enough to prompt the experimenting lot to go for a ‘wacky’ new look,” she says. Amruta shares her experience of teenage girls picking disposable lenses in shades of blue, aquamarine, green, red, orange, purple and even some with prints like cheetah, vampire or even polka dots to go with their nail art!

But is there a danger in wearing cosmetic lenses that frequently? “Not really, if you take care and keep your hands, eyes and the lenses-case clean. The case should be cleaned with clean water and the solution should be changed every 2-3 days; lenses should be rinsed well with the solution before wearing them,” says Amruta. “But importantly,” she adds, “The lenses should be changed or replaced as and when prescribed by the doctor or the optometrist, to avoid infection.” Also, it goes unsaid that one should go for only reputed brands and reliable optometrists to avoid complications and get the money’s worth.

Dressing up funky for a function or changing your look has reached a whole new level. Experimentation isn’t looked down at like it used to be some years back. A little care and you can have all the crazy fun you want to!
