Alexander McQueen was born in London on March 17, 1969. Later, he moved to the theatrical costumiers Angels and Bermans where he mastered six months of pattern cutting from the melodramatic 16th Century to the razor sharp tailoring which has become a 'McQueen Signature'. Aged 20 he was employed by the designer Koji Tatsuno. Further he completed a Masters degree in Fashion Design at Central Saints Martin's.
Alexander's achievements in fashion is definitely 'Hats Off' - British designer of the year for ten years, Best International designer of the year 2003 by The Council of fashion designers of America, GQ menswear designer of the year in 2007, The Excellent Designer Commander of the year 2003 and many more.
Though, the British designer recently died, his designs and inspirations will always be remembered. He focused mainly on the ' Art's sake'. McQueen also became head designer at the very famous Givenchy and Gucci.
The skull was the favourite motif and the skull scarf was his fans' favourite accessory. He later made his famous skull bags. He gave fashion the dangerously low Bumbster Pants.
He was also best known for his catwalk presentations, like human chess game to holographic Kate Moss, nothing was beyond his imagination! Alexander's runway collection developed his reputation for shock tactics and the abruptly used designs and embellishments. His bumbsters are still hard to find elsewhere.
He was accompanied in CSM by Kolkata designer Kallol Dutta. Dutta says, "I wanted to study in CSM simply because of the talent they were and still are known to nurture and produce. At the top of the CSM's list was Alexander McQueen. His work always stood out amongst the sea of emotionally vapid clothes one got to see, while certain members of fashion intelligentsia found him 'gimmicky'." He adds further, "I have always felt that to get people to understand his point of view, he had to conduct calculated experiments at his runway showings. He has many achievements in designing field. I too have learnt lot from him."
Designer Neeta Lulla, who was in city for the inauguration of multi-designer store 'Kish', says, "I am a very big fan of Alexander. I admire his designs, they are hard to find elsewhere. It is sad he is no more. But fashion industry will always cherish him for what he was, what he made and what is taught all of us." She further adds, "He made CSM's proud of such alumni. His life time achievement in fashion industry is beyond imagination."
