Light Shade Attires Flying Off The Shelves To Show Up Holi Colours

By: Monu Sharma, Feme Fashions Bureau, Kolkata | 26 Feb 2010

Holi may be the festival of colours, but white is what rules the day, as far as clothes go. Shop owners and designers say the demand for white garments even branded ones – shoots up ahead of the festival. With colours playing splash games in Holi, it is the base of vibrant shades and stylish cuts that can make the fashion conscious ‘Junta’ stands out in crowd, even if unrecognizable.

Holi is celebrated with gusto across the country and in most parts; white outfits become hot favourites as all the colours are visible on it.

For instance, in Bihar, people play holi with mud in morning and in evening, they change into white attires and go out to splash coloured powder and water on each other.

The feminine collection includes cotton salwar-kameez and kurtis whereas masculine collection includes kurta-pyjama. The focus is on loose fits to keep everyone comfortable with stylish and simple cuts.

Retail stores too have moved beyond offering regular garments, to name some; Spencer’s is inviting people with its in-house label ‘Asankhya’ that offers the contemporary woman embroidered and printed cotton kurtis at a low price starting from Rs 199 and the set of salwar-kameez-dupatta mix and match set starting from Rs 499.

Men and women under 15-35 years of age can also opt for ‘Tee’. The comfortable cotton tees can be paired with various style and washes in denims.

Fabindia has launched two new collections especially for ‘Holi’. A set of medium length and sleeveless ‘Kurtis’ with splash of colours as their theme and other collection of indigo print ‘Kurtas’ on corduroy.

”The sale of white kurtas certainly increases just before and around Holi. The demand for masculine as well as feminine wear is equally high during the festival of colours. Hence, we work with special set of in-house designers to create Holi special attires,” says Shaleen Maity from Fabindia.

She adds up, “Customers usually prefer white cotton kurta for one time wear. Apart from cotton, we also cater with Khadi, Mangalgiri and hand woven cotton.”

Vaibhav Verma, garment designer and exporter says, “White has always been colour that is appreciated very well in India, especially because of the hot climate as it is a neutral colour. ”

Designer Gauri Bajoria says, “People call holi as festival of colours but I would call it as the festival of radiance, which is enjoyed by people of all ages. On this day, people generally don’t pay much attention towards their clothing. But, I recommend one to be very stylish. Where white clothes so that holi colours appear more beautifully.”

She adds up smiling, “Kids are getting more conscious than elders. The craze of white is equally seen amongst the kids. They usually have a different way to play. Some put on more colours on their white attire to make their friends more jealous.”

Add more fun in holi with colourful ‘Crocs’.

Hence, white is the colour for all moods. Yeah, it’s true for ‘Holi’ season it’s one of the best bets as it is well suited to add more and more colours to it.
