Making your bundle of joy look prettier and cuter than they already are is a fun activity for all new parents. However, with tons of options available these days, selecting baby clothes has become easy and difficult at the same time!
It was not long back that grandmothers kept old sarees and shawls to make (soft) comfortable clothes for the new arrival in the family. This hardly ever had any aesthetic thought into it; but times have changed and one can depend on baby fabrics and clothes available in the markets for the kids’ comfort. The softest and most efficiently stitched outfits can be found for the little ones, be it an infant or a toddler, and mothers are going for them without a doubt! Plus, what’s really interesting is, that Indian mothers are also being particular in selecting specific prints and colours for girl and boy babies... something that was considered ‘Western’. The pink or blue question has become quite an important one these days, hasn't it?
Shares new mother Reena Khanna, “The concept of home-stitched clothes from old sarees or old fabrics is passé. I want my baby to look as pretty as possible and I trust the baby garment markets for the same. There’s a huge variety to pick from and they all come with comfort and style.”
Reena has recently bought pink jumpers and rompers for her 4-month-old daughter. “They have tiny butterflies and balloons printed on them and it looks incredibly pretty! The store also had blue and gray colours in similar outfits for boys, and those had teddies, bats and balls, Tom and Jerry prints on them,” Reena adds.
Designer Radhika Sathe of Pune feels that it is only about the ‘pretty’ look more than it is about the colour. “So while most in the West would stick to picking blue for boys and pink for girls, in a country as ours, where the concept never really originated, we can be more flexible in selecting colours and patterns for babies and even go for neutral designs,” says Radhika. The easiest way, of course, is to go for pastel shades, not sticking to the conventional pink and blue or even without limiting oneself to pale yellow, pista or aqua shades, as there are dozens of other hues to choose from.
Fashion for wrapping sheets
“White, off-white, cream and ivory can be great choices and you can even add soft delicate laces. While fabrics cotton, cots wool, bizi-lizi etc are great for daily wear, silk, satin, velvet lined with soft cotton for functional use work great,” says Designer Sheetal Banavalkar-Kolwalkar. She also says that bright red, blue, green and yellow shades for wrapping sheets and blankets look adorable no matter what.
Fabrics in turquoise, orange, dark green or red, either garments in one solid colour or with a contrast colour along the edges and sleeves look stunning. Radhika also suggests that going for the unusual at time can raise the ‘cute’ metre incredibly. Having baby ducks, penguins or bear cubs in bright red, blue, green, yellow with ribbons and bows, or even tees printed with purple, yellow and blue balloons. Apart from that choosing colours to match the baby's room and accessories like pillows and cushions will give an even better appeal.
The markets are flooding with lovely things to pick from, only allowing you to help make your special one look prettier and cuter. Could it get any better?
