Back to the Roots

Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2010 is happening in full swing attended by fashion lovers from all over. And if you are of the many that are well-updated on the page 3 news and celeb pics flashing on the Internet and TV, you would know that LFW has proved yet again that we are getting back to our roots, at least when it comes to style and fashion.

Combining the most contemporary patterns and cuts with ultra earthy hues and tones with fabrics like linen, cotton, handmade fabrics...designers showcased the most chic garments in the most ethnic style.

Sabyasachi has always been known for his earthy styles, but who joined his league this season were Malini Ramani with her creations in shades of beige, browns and chocolate; Swapnil Shinde with his spring colours with dashes of dull grey, blue and yellow; Rocky S too, with his bridal collection showed his love for earthy tones that are rarely used for Indian bridal wear.

Even movie stars seem to love the new trend. Saw Vidya Balan at the 55th Filmfare Awards night? The subtle makeup coupled with earthy toned saree and the rudraksha neckpiece went just perfect together.

If it's not the actual garment, it's either the embroidery or the handwork or antique-look jewellery and accessories or the makeup...in some way or the other, earthy, ethnic fashion is catching up big time!

Red Carpet Magic

No red carpet event can be complete without the occasional faux pas moments. In fact there are so many, giving so much to talk about, that we decided to save it for a lousy day when we need a cheer-up. So lets talk about the nice stuff...all the haute, glammed-up celebs that walked the red carpet a couple of days back for the 55th Filmfare Awards night!

If you have seen the pics flashing all over the Internet and on movie shows on TV, you couldn't have missed the lovely Roshan couple. While Suzzane looked lovely in the beautiful pearl and black Dior gown, Hrithik looked dapper in a stunning black Dior suit.

Deepika Padukone stole all hearts in a black Shantanu and Nikhil, with no more accessories than a simple ash gray clutch, and we'd have to say, she carried even the black nail paint very well!

Someone else who looked absolutely stunning in a Dior gown was Kangana Ranaut. Carrying nothing but a silver clutch with the simple strapless white gown, Kangana chose a natural peaches and creme makeup, and rocked the night.

Bipasha Basu, as always, knew how to look the best, yet different. Wearing a black Gauri and Nainika strapless gown, she looked gorgeous with the neatly tied hair, minimal makeup and accessories. And while Suzzane, instead of picking her sister’s jewellery, opted for Neelam’s creations, Bipasha stuck to Farah Khan Ali for her jewels.

All in all, the regular stunners stunned us this time too. For the seasoned fashion faux pas kings and queens...we'll talk about them too...soon!

'Hold on...! Seriously...?'

Liz Hurley's recent appearance at an event was not just shocking, but absolutely hard to believe even for the most outrageous fashion freaks all over!

Often keen on flaunting an Indian look; especially after her much-hyped marriage to Indian businessman Arun Nayar; this time too, madam Hurley decided to go 'Indian' by picking a silver-gray saree-style gown. But guess what? She forgot to wear a blouse or a bra, flashing her assets to everyone present and happily showing-off to her fans all over the world!

The sheer, near transparent outfit made her forget the much essential blouse, is a little hard to believe! While there is a word that she was left embarrassed by the end of the event and was seen covering herself with a handbag, photographers and Internet users all over the world are still in a tizzy.

But this isn't the first time for Elizabeth Hurley to show off tad more than required. Remember the much popular pictures of hers making rounds on the Internet, Page 3 magazines and tabloids a couple of years back, when she was captured by the paparazzi getting down a car, showing off cellulite? Or the time when the top model was left red-faced when her nude-coloured underwear peaked from her red dress at an event not long back?

Well, we all love the style diva for her beauty and panache and the charm she's been carrying since decades of a successful career. But moments like these leave us stunned and in utter disbelief!

Style and the 'Special Glow'

The preggers-glow is probably the most wonderful a woman can have; and its for all to ogle at. Our celebs and socialites carry themselves beautifully even during this apparently uncomfortable period by flaunting the most ravishing styles.

Karisma Kapoor’s recent appearance at an event in a simple pink and white chudidar has left us stunned! Neatly pinned loose tresses, subtle makeup, shimmering flat footwear and a chic red clutch...Karishma looked not a day older than 20, especially with the bright, preggers’ glow.

Daily soap-star Gauri Pradhan Tejwani was spotted in a lovely short orange dress in flowing chiffon at an event in B-town. With her short hairdo and minimal makeup and accessories, Gauri looked stunning as ever that night.

New-mom Amrita Arora too didn’t hesitate to show the baby bump in shimmering, flowing Manish Malhotra outfits. Though it was a little queer to see her always jazzed-up with heavy makeup, high-heels and all flashy accessories, we loved her charm.

Tara Sharma did a semi-Demi-Moore-act when she posed for a shoot, heavily pregnant, glowing and all glammed-up. Remember the original ‘hot mamma’ of Bollywood, Malaika Arora Khan? Not losing a bit of sex appeal, style and panache, Malaika looked stunning all through her pregnancy as she sported lovely dresses and gowns.

Who says only Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Alba, Nicole Kidman or Katie Holmes can do it? We have our style divas too, who can give any Hollywood star a run for their money!

Getting Better?

Marriage seems to have worked wonders not just for Shilpa Shetty, but also for her wardrobe! Why else would someone, who often could be spotted with some garish faux pas, be spotted in something absolutely stunning?

Forget her old favourites fuschia pinks, pista greens, purples, turmeric yellows and the likes; jeans with prints, padlocks, patches etc; mismatched footwear and accessories...it’s all passé!

We were a little scared when pictures of her returning from her honeymoon, wearing an orange sweat-suit at the airport, flashed all over the net. But her recent appearances have been nothing but pleasantly surprising.

The lovely baby pink and silver saree she wore for the recent DNA Style Awards was quite a stunner, more so because of the simple look she carried, with minimal accessories and makeup. The little black number by Donna Karan that she chose for Sanjay Dutt–Manyata anniversary bash accentuated her already gorgeous self, as did another Donna Karan dress in royal blue that she wore for the IPL auction.

Yes...there was a blunder a couple of days back when Shilpa wore a high-collar ink-blue velvet top with white pants at an event to unveil the new Rajasthan Royals’ t-shirts. But a little bad once in a while, we can choose to forget, cant we?

Wedges Forever

Malaika Arora Khan, Neha Dhupia, Shehnaz Treasurywala...all have it; Kangana Ranaut, Anusha Dandekar have it too; even Aishwarya Rai and Juhi Chawla have it! Nah...we are not talking about the charm, style and moolah. All these stars and socialites swear by one fashion accessory that can never go wrong – wedges.

Wedges are one kind of footwear that can style any kind of outfit and can go well with any occasion. Cork, wood, leather, silk straps...they come in a variety of styles and patterns, but what gives them the chic look is the classic ‘wedge’ shape.

Ash has been spotted a couple of times in her favourite very Indian-looking silver strap wedges, designers Nandita Mahtani, Neeta Lulla have been seen flaunting leather ones, models Mugdha Godse, Anusha Dandekar have worn cork wedges a few times. They wear it with Indian and western wear and look equally stunning.

Be it from a local Metro or Mochi store, or from high-end names like Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo or Givency, wedges always rock!

The Bling and The Shine

Celebs take wearing jewellery to a whole new level with their unconventional choices. The regular necklaces, rings, bangles and earrings are for us commoners! Our stars and socialites have access to much more chic stuff.

For instance, the gen-next style diva Sonam Kapoor can rarely be spotted wearing the conventional jewellery or accessories. Its only Christian Dior, Lara Bohinc or Roberto Cavalli necklaces for her. Another glam-doll who’s catching-up is Lara Dutta. Madam Dutta can be seen sporting a lot of neck-pieces by Cavalli, Dior and Forever 21.

Speaking of Forever 21, ‘animal lovers’ necklaces are very popular among our style divas! Twinkle Khanna, Sonam Kapoor, Pooja Bedi, Lara Dutta have all been seen wearing owls, peacocks, fish etc on their necks by Forever 21 and they all look simply stunning.

While picking bangles or bracelets, it’s international designers like Rachel Leigh, Anthropologie or Kenneth Jay Lane and Diorette or Juicy Couture for cocktail rings.

But stars don’t just flaunt international designs when it comes to jewellery. They do wear some stunning typically ‘Indian’ jewels too, but carry it with such style that the conventional pieces look extraordinarily beautiful. Remember Sonam’s traditional kundan jewellery she wore for IIFAs last year? She wore kundan with an off-beat Greek-style gown and simply rocked the red carpet!

International style icon and jewellery designer Padma Lakshmi often can be seen wearing her very ethnic bracelet and earrings with very western gowns. Kirron Kher is a huge Amrapali jewellery fan and wears their pieces with the same elegance every time.

All we can do is sit and ogle and eat our hearts out...*sigh*

The Power of Black

There are some sure tricks to look chic at any event, anytime at all; and our glam dolls know them all very well. Wearing black is one such ‘look-good-trick’ that never fails them.

Be it elegant Manish Arora gowns or Cavalli dresses; Sabyasachi sarees or Manish Malhotra Anarkalis, black is ‘ever green’ (no pun intended) when it comes to looking good. Monochrome or with a dash or colour or in subtle combinations, black always catches the eye.

Who can forget Aishwarya’s stunning, sheer black Sabyasachi saree with dashes of shimmering red for ‘Paa’ premier? Or her flashy black Anarkali with traditional motifs by the same designer for ‘Rann’ premier? Remember Kajol’s favourite black saree that sometime back she showed-off at every other event, yet looking prettier each time?

Everybody simply loved Kareena’s simple ensemble in the royal black and gold chanderi saree she chose for a ‘3 Idiots’ promotional event (film promotions and premiers are great places to spot the beauties in stunning blacks!); Kajol has been sporting a lot of black lately for ‘My Name is Khan’ events and press meets.

Even the ‘not-so-frequent-at-events’ faces trust the hue to look their best at their occasional appearances. While Gul Panag looked absolutely gorgeous in a black Anita Dongre saree at the Star Screen Awards, Shazahn Padamsee’s simple black Mango zipper dress at another fashion event left all girls eating their heart out!

Black not only makes any shape, size and height look good, but also hides flaws like a little cellulite here and there. Apart from that it complements all skin tones and goes well at all occasions!

The Real Divas

Many glam-dolls struggle to revive their flagging careers and to survive in the tempting shimmering tinsel town, yet are left as nothing but a bunch of ‘wannabes’. But there a few who enjoy all the attention and success even in their semi-retired stage of life.

After having rocking careers in the 1970s and 80s, these actresses still rule the page 3 scene; no event can be complete without them and still make everyone around them eat their hearts out!

Rekha, Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman, Neetu Singh and a few others – our very own Sophia Loren, Liz Taylor, Greta Garbo – are some of the lucky few who continue to get better with age. Not losing their yesteryear charm and elegance, these ladies still rule big time!

Sure a lot of effort goes into maintaining what they had some 25-30 years back. All credit their stunning shapes and radiance to years of devout yoga and a well-watched diet. Having the best stylists, makeup artists and designers in the business working for them 24*7, they still continue to give today’s stunners a run for their money!

Rekha maintaining her ever-traditional look with the vibrant Kanjivarams and gold, Hema with her shimmering chiffons by Manish Malhotra, Neetu Singh donning anything and everything that’s in-style and carrying it so well; with their accessories by international designers, the yesteryear divas still continue to be the ‘real divas’.

Can we expect the same style and panache from Priyanka, Kareena, Deepika, Katrina and the rest?

Not just shoes...

When celebs dress up, they ‘really’ dress up, and we mean they take it real seriously! It’s not just their outfit and makeup that matters; but it is also the other accessories that complete the look.

Stars and socialites, as it is very well known, wouldn’t settle for anything less than stunning designer pair of shoes that cost nothing less than at least a few hundred dollars.

Remember Kareena’s glittering Christian Louboutin for the ‘3 Idiots’ success bash? Or Malaika Arora Khan’s bold peach Jimmy Choo sandals for Hrithik’s birthday party? Or Deepika’s favourite Blowfish gladiator sandals?

Be it Gucci’s studded ankle boots or strappy Aldo Vidaurri or Jimmy Choo sandals, jewelled footwear by Giuseppe Zanotti or the typical ‘bow-tied heels’ by Louis Vuitton...they have it all and flaunt it too well.

While the ladies don these flashy names, the guys aren’t less either. It’s only Armani, Gucci, Diesel, Versace for them. Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan and Shahrukh ‘King’ Khan - the stars who're known for looking dapper 24*7 - simply cannot settle for anything less!

Clearly, the whole ‘page 3 celeb’ look cannot be complete unless tiny details are taken care of, right from the tip to the toe, literally!

Switched to the 'Saree Mode'

Ash seems to have taken the ‘Bachchan bahu’ tag way too seriously! Save a couple of appearances in Anarkalis and chudidars or handful of photo shoots that require western-wear, madam Bachchan has been seen wearing traditional sarees at almost every event, party or award night.

Be it shimmering, dazzling Manish Malhotra sarees or ethnic, earthy Sabyasachi sarees or very Indian traditional ‘heirloom-kind’ pieces of art, Ash seems to be flaunting them all.

She has repeated the pink saree she wore for the Police Show in 2008 a couple of times, wore a stunning red and black Sabyasachi saree for ‘Paa’ premier, a beautiful green Abu-Sandeep saree for IIFA last year; so much so, Ash even wore a red-black-white Sabyasachi saree (an ensemble that was criticised by most for the abstract look) for her appearance with hubby on Oprah last year!

She wore a stunning red Manish Malhotra saree for Screen Awards this year (and wore the same to Hrithik’s birthday bash the same evening!); she even wears a traditional red saree in the ‘Phir Mile Sur...’ video.

She does accessorise the whole ‘saree look’ with stunning, chic Louis Vuitton, Versace, Bottega Veneta or Chanel clutches, dazzling strappy sandals and stilettos from Jimmy Choo, Asos, Clarks, Dune etc, and exotic jewels ranging from diamonds, rubies, emeralds, turquoise and sapphires.

But the fact remains...the glam-doll is turning into a more khandani bahu. Carrying the Jaya Bachchan legacy forward; hmmm...we wonder...

Star wives and their 'lucky stars'

Being a star wife has more advantages than one, and our glam-world can vouch for that. Apart from being constantly in the limelight and being with the country’s most sought-after men, the lucky ladies get to flaunt the loveliest outfits, priciest jewels and makeup!

The best stylists, makeup artists and grooming experts are running 24*7 to give them the best look and make everyone else eat their hearts out on seeing these style divas at events and functions.

Gauri Khan probably leads the band of lucky star wives, followed by Suzanne Roshan. Be it Alexander McQueen, Versace, Herve Leger, Roberto Cavalli dresses or bags and clutches from Versace, Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Berkin or Chanel, they have it all and flaunt it just right.

The star jewellery is designer pieces of art Farah Khan Ali, Neelam, Gucci or Versace and loaded with pricey diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. Tina Ambani, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Suzzane Roshan are all known for their stunning jewels. The footwear and other accessories too aren’t anything but stunning, rare pieces.

Save for just a few (like Manyata Dutt, Kiron Rao etc.) celeb-wives Malaika Arora Khan, Mallika (Zayed) Khan, Natasha (Fardeen) Khan, Jaya Bachchan, Neetu Kapoor, Twinkle Khanna etc are some other ‘often spotted’ and ‘in’ star wives, who are almost seen flaunting the best look.

Some SERIOUS style check please!

Either she’s getting gifts from someone who really hates her or she’s in dire need of a stylist! The stunningly beautiful Zarine Khan who debuted with Salman Khan in ‘Veer’ this week has such close resemblance to Katrina Kaif that we (unknowingly) started expecting a lot from her!

Ms Khan’s ghastly sense of style yells ‘Help!’ in your face and makes you want to suggest some basic style tips. No...we aren’t exaggerating at all; check out her recent public appearances and you will know.

Zarine has taken starring in a period film so seriously, it seems as though she found her great grandmom’s old trunk full of clothes and has been flaunting them oh-so-proudly.

At the ‘Veer’ Exhibition Race, Zarine wore a black and white flared skirt, flowing up to the ankles, with a ruffled, sleeveless white top. If that wasn’t all, the strappy sandals and a black belt and handbag perfectly fit the 1960s.

Earlier, whilst unveiling the first look for ‘Veer’, she wore a bright red saree with golden border and motifs and no accessories but a golden clutch and golden jhumkas...straight from granny’s times! Later, at a radio studio to promote the movie, Zarine wore a peach and silver saree, again not doing any good for her expected glam look.

A golden and pink saree for ‘Veer’ Libas collection launch, the leaf-green Anarkali with a maroon dupatta at a promotional event and crossing all limits of serious fashion crime by wearing a beige and golden Anarkali with a purple dupattas at the special screening of ‘Veer’...we are speechless!

The lady needs some serious fashion advice and an efficient stylist ASAP; or at least subscribe to a movie magazine to go through the latest that her contemporaries choose to wear!

Bold, Beautiful and Chic

Be it sheer, balloon sleeves with high-waist baggy trousers at the Chivas Fashion Tour or the old Greek-style one-shoulder dress with heavy kundan jewellery at IIFA 2009 Extravaganza, she carries it all so well that one wonders how this 20-something new-entrante in the glam world manages to do it!

Yes...it’s Sonam Kapoor we’re talking about; she stuns us each time we spot her at any event, party or premier. It’s not that she does something extra, but just the way she carries it or accessorises her outfits makes her stand out in any kind of crowd.

It has even happened so that she’s worn similar gowns to what some of her contemporaries wore; but she either picks colours much better or makes the look way more beautiful by choosing the perfect clutch or footwear or necklace.

Sonam chose a multi-coloured short dress, again for IIFA festivities last year, and paired it with orange clutch and pink shoes – something that might’ve looked garish on someone else, looked absolutely chic on Sonam. She stunned everyone on a chat show sometime back, when she wore a knee-length pink off-shoulder dress with black gladiator footwear and carried it perfectly well.

Ms. Kapoor went to cast her vote true 'Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Olsen twins’ style', as she donned an ultra-casual leggings and cardigan with a large animal-print scarf and red wayfarers.

Remember her pleated metallic dress and gothic look for the Harpers Bazaar shoot? Her owl necklace that she flaunts on many occasions? The style she added to a plain black Louis Vuitton outfit by wearing spiky heels and a fuschia pink clutch, in the Hi Blitz photo shoot last year?

Fashion sense picked from her designer mother? Well, don’t know about that, but Sonam sure is here to add an ultra-glam pep and spunk to the cliché Hindi glam world.

When you stop looking like yourself...

Among the many trends that our dear celebs mimic from the West is ‘extreme makeovers’. Cosmetic surgery rules when it comes to looking good in the glam world.

Some admit, many deny, but whatever they do, they can’t hide what can be seen on camera. Breast implants, body sculpting and cellulite removal are way too common. Transformations are a much more serious business.

Everyone’s aware of Rekha, Sridevi and Shilpa Shetty’s nose jobs...the evidence is clear in the old and new pics. But has anyone checked out the latest Sridevi? Well, she doesn’t look like ‘Sridevi’ anymore! With dental veneers, skin lightening, reworked nose, slim, chiselled-look (body sculpting strongly suspected), she hardly looks like our old ‘Hawa Hawai’ girl.

The naturally-stick-thin, noodle-haired Kangana Ranaut looks tad different than what we saw of her until yesterday. With fuller lips and different brows, in addition to a couple of (much-needed) kilos, we’re not saying she’s looking bad. Speaking of fillers to get pouty, fuller lips, Esha Deol, Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra, Minisha Lamba...all in the list as well.

The Bachchan bahu is no exception to the cosmetic surgery lure! Check out Aishwarya’s pre-Miss World pics and you’d know what we mean. Skin lightening, nose re-structuring, dental veneers, brow lift, botox...phew! It’s a huge list. Talk of botox and apart from Aishwarya, some ladies who sure have the ‘ironed botox face’ are Rekha, Hema Malini, Sridevi, Gauri Khan, Queenie Singh and even biggies like Shahrukh and Amitabh.

Also, the transformation of actresses like Preity Zinta, Karishma Kapoor, Kareena...not just plain weight loss and makeup; some changes are beyond explanation! Only few are unlucky to have a botched surgery like Koena Mitra.

Hmmm...looks like Rakhi Sawant was right when she said... ‘jo cheez bhagwan nahi deta, woh doctor deta hain!’ (What God doesn’t give, a doctor can).

Animal Lovers

We all love the animal print trend that’s being promoted by celebs since quite some time now. But this is something that can look absolutely stunning if done right and be a major fashion blunder with even the slightest mistake!

The right print, the right design and the right accessories can make you a head turner. Animal prints give that bold yet chic touch to your personality. Take for instance Sushmita Sen; the Bong babe is such an animal print fan that last year saw her don it almost everywhere she went!

Ms Sen is a devout Roberto Cavalli fan and possibly owns almost every animal print garment by Cavalli! Remember her much-famous kaftan dress at IIFA 2009? We all adored her there, as we do most of her dresses and gowns. But what she wore for a book launch last year was unforgivable! Brown animal print skin-fit top with purple lacy embroidery!!

There are some whose print dresses just go unnoticed; like Sonali Bendre’s at ‘Paa’ premier. But there are some who just cannot get out of our heads for a really long time! Remember Kareena Kapoor at Farah Khan’s ‘Tere Mere Beach Mein’? She looked stunning in the Cavalli top and blue denims with the super-glam Jimmy Choo yellow sandals.

Then there was Sonam Kapoor who went to cast her vote last year ‘total Hollywood style’. The super casual look was made super-glam with a large animal print scarf, red wayfarers, loose hair and ‘I rule the world’ look - sure added spunk!

But what someone really needs to advise some celebs/socialites is that they should either copy some of their more stylish friends or get rid of the ‘match all’ style with print bags, print glares, print footwear with print dresses; come on guys! It makes you spend a bomb yet make you look nothing more than a wannabe!

Speaking of Fashion Blunders...

Alright...so we all agree to celebs promoting a particular look for their upcoming movies. Aamir’s changing hairdos, Sahid’s jackets, Rishi Kapoor’s sweaters (back in the day)...we don’t mind a little makeover for our stars at all.

But what Vidya Balan has been trying to promote of late is...well er...beyond words, and we’re sure even most of her die-hard would agree on this one. Miss Balan was seen wearing a saree from her soon-to-release film ‘Ishqiya’ at the 'Dulha Mil Gaya' premier recently shocked almost everyone present around!

Her ‘maid’ look with loose hair, garish yellow and red chiffon saree with large floral print, no makeup or accessories except a few shimmering metal bangles (the ones that girls wore in the late 1980s) was not just shocking but will remain the talk of tinsel town for a long time for sure! Imagine what would’ve happened if Neetu Chandra flaunted her look from ‘Traffic Signal’ or Tabu wore her ‘Chandni Bar’ look at award nights and movie premiers!!

Apparently, we were wrong when we thought she’s finally ‘got it right’ when we saw her in ‘Paa’. Phew! Vidya has been around for a while now, but looks like she still is in dire need of a stylist and a grooming consultant; or if not that, at least try and copy people she sees around her. How difficult can that be?

Flowing Gowns everywhere!

Evening gowns is the latest love for our glam ladies. Be it a party, an event, an awards function or any social gathering, gowns can be seen everywhere.

No...we haven’t forgotten our Indianness! Our designers are being super creative and blending the western style of gowns with the very Indian touch creating an ultra-glam look that looks chic yet very ethnic.

A quick checking out of the glam-dolls at the red carpet at the recently held Screen Awards’ night would give a clear idea. While the petite Amrita Rao donned a shimmering golden flowing gown, Dia Mirza stuck to her casual-cum-formal-look by wearing a lovely pale chiffon gown. Katrina wore a saree-style beige gown and Mugdha Godse came in a similar style pale green satin gown.

Style-diva Sushmita Sen has been seen flaunting many from her glam collection, especially at various events to promote her latest flick ‘Dulha Mil Gaya’; her favourite being the numerous mono-chrome black ones and the animal prints.

Speaking of fusion style, remember madam Shetty and her unique saree style golden gown that she wore for her reception? Shilpa dazzled that evening and sure was one unique bride in tinsel town. Talk of Bollywood brides and there was Isha Koppikar wore a flowing white Ashley Rebello for her sangeet.

Tarun Tahiliani, Pria Kataria-Puri, Nachiket Barve, Swapnil Shinde, Manish Malhotra are some of our top designers who have mastered the art of creating just the prefect ‘Indo-western’ look for many beauties that flaunt the popular gowns.

It’s ‘MM’ everywhere!

As more and more global designers can be seen being flaunted by Indian celebs, one name that’s never left the scene since a real long time now is Manish Malhotra.

The Kapoor sisters have always been loyal to the designer, but off late more and more of their contemporaries seem to be in love with Manish’s ultra-glam style. Recently there have been atleast a dozen occasions where actors could be seen wearing stunning Manish Malhotra outfits!

While Sridevi donned a blue sheer saree at the Couture Week last year, Shamita Shetty wore a shimmering blue and turquoise saree for sister Shilpa’s wedding; Shilpa herself wore a pink saree for her engagement; Kajol and Aishwarya both wore gorgeous olive-green and golden Manish Malhotra outfits at the Apsara awards recently, Urmila wore a fine printed, multi-coloured short bohemian dress for the Chivas Fashion Tour...the list can go on!

It should not be that surprising, since Manish sure deserves all the attention he gets. What makes his couture so ‘in’ is his unique style of blending the most peculiar colours and making the most unimaginable combinations of hues, getting the perfect Indo-western look, still retaining the ethnic touch to every outfit; be it chudidars, kurtis, sarees or dresses.

Carrying forward the 'Rekha Legacy'?

Vidya Balan takes her sarees seriously, and we mean ‘real seriously’! Check her out on any event, party, photo shoot, even her movies...madam Balan dons a saree; and not any saree; it has to be an ethnic garment that oozes out ‘Indianness’.

Vidya looks stunning without a doubt, thanks to her perfect face and body and the very ethnic look that she’s been blessed with. But what one wonders is, that is she following the footsteps of Rekha while picking her fashion?

Name one event when Rekha was not seen flaunting a Kanjivaram saree with gold jewellery. Difficult, right? Well, the similar seems to be happening with Vidya! If it’s not her Anarkalis it’s her ethnic cotton or silk sarees with borders so beautiful that ladies eat their hearts out.

She might not be very good at her western couture, she might have the best makeup in the industry, she might have been reluctant to lose weight; but we have to give her this one. The lady really knows what suits her best...what suits the conventional Indian girl and what can never go wrong.

One needn’t be surprised if she’s spotted flaunting similar sarees some time down the line as well! Who’s complaining? Not us! While Rekha appears loud and garish most of the times, Vidya invariably seems soothing, refreshing and well...stunning!

Going Global all the Way?

Where are all our designers? Emergency...emergency! All our top-notch designers appear to have vanished! Well, atleast that is what the scene looks like at major events, especially international events.

There are some like Nachiket Barve, Sabyasachi, Gauri and Nainika etc who have become a favourite among many top Indian celebs, but the number is too less.

Movie stars, socialites and star wives, all go for high-end names like Dolce and Gabbana, Versace, Armani, Roberto Cavalli and the likes...the trend going up by the day with each one finding a place on some hyped magazine cover (and showing it off so very well!)

All we can say is guys...! give a chance to designers from the homeland too! Remember Ritu Beri, who went all the way to the fashion capital – Paris – taking her splendid styles with her? Manish Arora, Rocky S, Sabyasachi and many more have made a mark internationally.

While our actors can’t do without an Armani or Versace suit, the fairer sex from the industry simply cannot do without a Mark Jacobs or Preen or Dior dress! Hmmm...makes us wonder a little...have these ladies seen Swapnil Shinde or Monisha Jaising dresses? Have they ever seen Manish Arora or Rocky S pants and suits?

Not that our celebs don’t go for Indian designers; infact they even have their favourites; but it’s definitely not as common as international ones; and all we say is give them a fair chance too!

Copycat Celebs!

Looks like the otherwise fashion-conscious celebs also need some pointers on style at times; no wonder they end-up copying each other so much, not failing to catch our eye almost always.

Remember the chic yellow-brown Monisha Jaising casual tunic that Arpita Khan, Roshni Chopra and Nina Manuel wore just a few days apart for different events? Or the black dress that Lara Dutta wore for a ‘Blue’ event and Dia Mirza wore for ‘3 Idiots’ premier? Apparently, Dia and Lara also have the same black and gold saree by Ritu Kumar!

Kareena Kapoor and Sharmila Khanna wore almost the same ethnic Kashmiri work kurti just a couple of months apart for two different events.

And remember the short satin knot-dress? Amrita Rao wore it in gold for ‘The Perfect Bride’, Priyanka Chopra wore the same in blue whilst promoting ‘Pyaar Impossible’ and Rani flaunted the very same in green at DPL event!

Then there’s the cute little day dress by Marc Jacobs that Katrina Kaif and Preeti Jhangiani wore for separate events.

Apparently Priyanka Chopra, Reshma Bombaywalla, Malaika Arora (and maybe many more!) own the mauve and beige dress by Monisha Jaising, which they’ve proudly shown-off at major events!

Surprised? Don’t be! There are still many more copycat celebs to join the list!

Trend Promoters or Disasters?

So we all love to copy them when it comes to fashion and style; but some celebrities really make us think again given their utterly disastrous sense of style and they have like a million ‘faux pas’ moments!

Take Deepika for instance. The otherwise stunning, style-conscious young star, for an event in LA, wore ghastly antique silver ghagra and waist-length blouse with a loud green dupatta and with so much bling that it not only made you wonder what she was thinking but also prick you in the eye!

Sushmita Sen shocked everyone when she took her animal-print obsession to a whole new level by wearing a beige and black leopard-print top with purple (yes, you read it right!) lace-like add-ons at a book launch. As if her animal prints weren’t enough during the IIFA and other events!

Oh and remember Madame Koppikar who oh-so-proudly showed-off her red-white wedding bangles on a outfit that only a high-school girl would wear? Isha wore a red-white belt (to match her bangles!) on blue jeans and short denim jacket with a white tank for a dance event; and we’re not even mentioning her just-out-of-bed makeup and hairdo!

Spotted Mugdha Godse at an event wearing a garish brinjal-black (so not good for the dusky ladies!) halter-neck jumpsuit and couldn’t help but wonder will our stars give-up on the jumpsuit fad already? After all, everyone’s not Sonam Kapoor to carry all kinds of experiments very well.

And then there’s the famous Kareena Kapoor fashion disaster that’s been making rounds all over the Internet since quite some time now. Ms. Kapoor, walking blissfully ignorant with beau Saifu, wore her gym pants with the shortest tee possible! Phew!!

Flaunting the Nudes

Celebrities are super cautious about their style and what appears to be a hot favourite among almost all page 3 stars is going nude.

No...not in the literal sense! But choosing nude hues and ‘bare’ look is pretty ‘in’ these days and the loud, garish pinks, reds and maroons that are fast disappearing from the party scene.

Nudes are the shades that look chic and in fashion always, and our celebs have proved this time and again! Be it Twinkle’s elegant beige clutch or Deepika’s subtle beige saree or the footwear in nude shades that Raveena, Kareena, Karisma and many others flaunt and parties, shades like peach, beige, caramel, light pink, light brown etc are everyone’s favourite and they go great with all skin tones and body types.

The new entrant in B-town, Jacqueline Fernandes, recently wore a Dolce and Gabbana dress in nude and had all eye balls; Kareena wore her nude sandals at a talk show; Katrina’s nude lip gloss has always been popular...the list is unending!

Several celebrities even have their favourite handbags, clutches, footwear or make up in nude shades that they even wear every now and then, looking absolutely stunning each time.

Nudes are here to stay people, and for good!

Anarkali Dresses...Off and On Trends!

The Anarkali dress appears to be quite a talk-of-the-tinsel-town when it comes to discussing celeb styles. Be it Manish Malhotra’s peculiar blend of contrast hues and loads of glitter or Sabyasachi’s earthy, ethnic, ‘raw feel’ of deep dark shades, the Anarkali pattern dress does a cameo every now and then at almost every major event or party!

Vidya Balan, who has often been ridiculed for her uncanny sense of style, is a loyal follower of the Anarkali dress and apparently simply loves to show-off a new addition in her ever-flowing collection; the lady obviously has one in each colour and from every designer and label!

Manisha Koirala is another occasional fan of the pattern, as is Dia Mirza. Dia has been seen showing off the Anarkali pattern not just in the regular salwar-suit style, but also in the casual evening dresses and plain dresses.

The typical Manish Malhotra style Anarkali dress has been an all time favourite for Madhuri, Aishwarya, Katrina and the likes; Ash has even been seen in her favourite Abu Jani/Sandeep Khosla pink Anarkali more than once!

And whilst we’re thinking ‘this is it!’ for the Anarkali, it suddenly pops up again, this time at another much-hyped event...assuring everyone that it is here to stay, and for good!

Quirky Fashion Making Rounds

‘Individualistic’, in common words quirky or bold fashion seem to be making quite a style statement. Movie premiers are the places where such trends can be spotted easy. At the recent Paa premier, what celebrities like Kiran Rao, Avantika Malik, Jenelia D’souza, Saif Ali Khan and many more sported was nothing but bold yet peculiarly stylish. Be it Saif’s black Pathani with a bright red bandana or Kiran Rao’s blood red ultra-casual sleeveless top with improvised harem pants and bold golden necklace or Avantika Malik’s vibrant dress with sheer black leggings and black pumps or Jenelia’s queer 1980s style look (that many wondered was fab or drab!)...it all grabbed eyes, with pics making rounds all over the Internet.

But that is not even all; what seems to be more interesting is that the bold and fancy (or often ridiculous appearing!) look is a result of the effort of many high-end designers and designer brands! Sabyasachi, Manish Malhotra, Versace, Gucci, Roberto Cavalli and the likes are behind many of the peculiar star styles. If not the entire outfit, some accessories are added to give the ‘funky’ ‘bold’ look. Like Kareena donned the catchy nose-ring on an elegant Manish Malhotra saree or Kiran Rao carried a maroon clutch and wore a antique-golden coloured necklace with her black and red outfit or the bright hued sneakers that Akshay Kumar often wears not just with casuals but also with chic formal suits!

These styles are probably something that makes these celebs different from the common fashionista.
