SUMMER SKIN CARE FOR INDIAN SKIN

The summer sun is here to stay, earlier than ever this year.
With the summer season comes skin tan, skin burning for the sensitive ones, pigmentation of the skin and other sun & heat associated skin issues like fungal infections, excessive sweating, and body odour.

Most frequently I am asked the following questions by my patients

- How to protect my skin this summer from the sun and damage?
- What sunscreen shall I use?
- What do I do before swimming or a picnic?
- How can i prevent a tan?

Here are a few tips to protect your skin this summer:

CLEANSE THE SKIN:
The skin sweats more in summer hence increased dirt and grime. Wash the face with plain cool water every few hours; this will wash off the dirt and sweat. There is no need to use a cleanser more than twice a day unless it is after playing sports.

Use a soap free or PH balanced cleanser so that the skins acidity is maintained.

MOISTURIZING THE SKIN:
If the skin is dry to normal or stressed out by constant exposure to air condition make sure you apply moisturizer to the skin before heading out.Otherwise apply the moisturizer at night before bed time on a clean face.

USE SUN PROTECTION:
Use a sun protection cream –sunscreen or sun block with SPF of at least 24 daily.

There are many options available. Creams / lotions / gels. If you have oily skin, use a lighter formulation like lotion or gel, for normal to dry skin use a cream form.

The sun protection has to be applied every 3 - 4 hrs liberally onto areas of exposure from face, ears and neck to arms and feet. Don’t be stingy with the sun protection.

If you are going to be outdoors for a long time you can use SPF of 50+. For water based and active sports use a sweat proof and water proof sun protection cream.

The ideal amount to be used is 5 ml. But it is slightly impractical as the face gets a whitish or grayish sheen. Use a 50 paisa coin size amount for the face. Apply the sun protection at least 20 mins before stepping out. Time is required for the absorption of the sun protection cream / lotion.

Don’t forget to reapply, as the protection only lasts for 3 – 4 hrs.

After water sports or sweating, wash the area with cool water and reapply the sun protection cream.

The sun protection cream is the last layer to be applied. All other creams / lotions should be applied beneath this.

EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN:
At the start of the summer exfoliate your skin at least once a week to remove all dead cells and flakes left over from the winter. Exfoliate gently using micro beads as opposed to harsh exfoliation with larger beads as this can injure the skin and make it sun sensitive.

After about 4 – 6 weekly exfoliations, bring it down to once in 2 weeks in the summer.

SHOWER TIPS:
A hot shower might feel great, but cool water is better for the skin, especially in the summer. The cool water cools the body and skin temperature and retains oils and moisture in the skin.

Don’t dry the skin roughly with towel. Gently pat it dry. Do leave some moisture on the skin so that when you apply the moisturizer the skin can absorb it fully and seal it in.

Follow these few tips and your skin will be at its glowing best this summer.

Hi Dr Chytra,

I agree to what Rakshanda said. I too feel sunscreen lotion burns my skin. Could you please help me with the best one. Though I am not into sales but being a Journalist gotta lot of field work to do.

Use a moisturizer before the sunscreen. This will help lessen the burning sensation which maybe due to dry skin. Also try to use a umbrella to protect the skin

Hi Doctor,

Thanks a ton!!! for immediate suggestion. By the way, please recommend the best sunscreen. I use Lakme, is it good one. How is Cetaphil?? I do not use moisturiser, it doesn't suits my skin. My sister in Mumbai recommended me to use this medicated lotion. But, I am in dilemma so have not used till yet. What you say Dr.
03/06/2010 15:51:55
Use the Neutrogena SPF 55 or Suncross UVA. These are good sunscreens. Cetaphil is a good wash and moisturizer, the SPF also is quite good

They are available at Medical stores

Oh gr8. Thanks a ton.

The burning seems to suggest that you may be sun sensitive
Use a Calamine lotion as soon as the burning starts and apply ice, this will help it

Also take Vit C with Vit E oral supplements every morning
This is an anti oxidant and will help you with increasing skins resistance

Hello Doctor

I use Olay anti ageing cream whch contains Spf15.. is that oki.. i dont expose myself much to sun.. My age is 25... My skin looks dull sometimes. i am not able to figure out the problem.. can u suggest me a very good cream?

Thank u
03/24/2010 14:23:48
Priya,
You require a sunscreen product with SPF of minimum 26, as the sun is very strong in the summer, even if you are indoors most of the time
There are many options in the market, go with a medical range of Sunscreen
Use your olay first and then apply a sunscreen like, suncross uva, cetaphil, sunban, neutrogena etc. You will get them at medical shops

can you check this & suggest me whether I can use this product, hope this does’t have any side effects…

hello mam

m using sunbanfort...

m havng strech mark in m arms arean can u suggest some cream?

and m having pores in m face thts looks too bad tell me some cream.. m havng oily skin
01/26/2012 16:38:18
Sadly, old stretch marks cant be treated completely, i suggest that you consult a dermatologist in your area for fractional laser therapy.

for open pores and oily skin use a cleanser with salicylic acid once a day at night and also you can use a retinol based cream, thrice a week for the open pores

hello mam ,this is pavithra at the end of my lips the skin turns to black colour both the side i am using betnovate-N CREAM BY DOCTOR SUGGESTION IS THIS CREAM WORKS pls suggest me any other cream
04/15/2012 15:47:40
Betnovate is a steroid and you should not use it for a long time.
use a moisturizer with a lightening agent like kojic acid or embolic and apply vaseline on top
also use milk cream on your lips once in 3 days to exfoliate the lips

My arms always become dark at open areas, no matter wht cream i used.???Please help me how to get ride of this ?Also tell me how to prevent this??? which cream is best for me??
04/15/2012 15:51:09
If your arms are getting dark due to tan / sun , then you can use glycolic acid to exfoliate.
There is a good de tan lotion from Kosmocare that you can use daily on your arms

Use sunscreen n you arms, take a half portion body lotion and half portion sunscreen. Aplly this post shower in the morning
You can also use an antioxidant pill like KosmoGlow that will help decrease/prevent sun damage

Hi mam,
I travel long distances and am exposed to the sun a lot. My arms are badly tanned (around 10 shades darker than the rest of my body)
Is there any way to get it back to normal. I use lotus SPF 40 sunscreen.
04/19/2012 23:10:23
Use a medicated sunscreen with spy 50 at least...
use a glycolic acid based lotion at night to detain your arms....
also scrub your body once a week to get the dead skin off and this helps reduce the tan
