Kathak Dance Maestro Shree Keka Sinha presented a global dance drama in English Baandh Bhenge Dao - Breaking All Bariers at Rabindra Natya Mandir in Dadar, Mumbai.
"Our mission is to convey the works of Shree Rabindranath Tagore to more and more people, in all the cities, towns and villages of the world. Nobody except us can keep Tagore’s works alive, as he lives in through the eyes of all posterity and dwell in our love. Tagore’s desire was also to reach out to the non-bengali speaking addressees, and that was one of the prime reasons for translation of the entire volume of Gitanjali into English," reveals Keka.
Kathak Dance Maestro Shree Keka Sinha’s modest attempt is to Break All The Barriers (Bandh Bhenge Dao), mainly infringing the geographical boundaries as the audience comes from various corners of the world. This concept is the brainchild of Sinha and in this humble endeavor, they performed in various styles of dance, the likes of Odissi, Kathak and Creative dance style. The substantial portion of the program was in English; thereby eliminating the language barrier too.
The audience witnessed Shree Keka Sinha of Bombay performing Tagore’s Abhisar ( Companion), the tale of the Basabdatta, the beautiful dancing girl in Mathurapuri (a city 145 km south to Delhi) who was once drunk with the wine of her youth, ultimately reaches salvation by the mercy of Saint Upagupta. Here Kathak and Creative dance style were used together with Hindustani Classical music.
The next dance performance was a dramatic discourse of Karna and Kunti ( Karna-Kunti Sangbad) that beholded the aspect of play in its course while Kunti (mother) meets Karna (son) and reveals his true identity as the Kurukshetra war approached. The play by NrityaKala from London depicted the confrontation of the mother and the son duo, their relationship and love of separation. The voice-overs were done by National Film Award winning actor Farooq Sheikh and Shabana Azmi who is a film actress and social activist, and her performances in films in a variety of genres have generally earned her praise and awards including five wins of the National Film Award for Best Actress. Cid Shaha, a Bengali dancer from London who played Karna indeed made his presence felt through cretive dance movements, collaborating classical dance forms with touch of yoga and martial arts.
Then was Bichitra Ananda, a Manipuri and contemporary dance based on Tagore's songs by Sanjib Bhattacharya from USA.
The last but not the least was a dance performance on a medley of some of the most immemorial songs of Tagore. Since, they performed for a global audience the Tagore songs in Bengali were accompanied by English subtitles. The songs were the likes of Elem Notun Deshe (I Came In A New Country), Ami Chini Go Chini Tomare O Go Videshini (I Know You Foreigner Girl) and Amra Nutan Jiboneri Duth (We Are The Heralds of Youth).
It was on the shoulders of the youth to take the lead and carry on the rich traditions of the past, hence the medley concluded with the song that said,
Amra Nutan Jiboner Ei Duth,
Amra Chaunchol, Amra Odbhuth,
Amra Bera Bhangi, Amra Ashok Bone
Ranger Neshay Rangee,
…………………Amra Nutan Jiboner Ei Duth
(We Are The Heralds of Youth,
We are restless, We are unique,
We break down barriers and sway to the forest’s intoxication,
.………………We Are The Heralds of Youth)
"Our message to Today’s youth is to carry forward the spirit of jumping into obstacles and uncovering a way for themselves and the entire world," feels Keka.
"Bombay being the pioneering city for the transcreation, we aim to take this to numerous cities across India, Canada, USA and United Kingdom," signed off Keka.

Indian Council for Cultural Relations in collaboration with National Centre for the Performing Arts organized a cultural evening with Hindustani Classical Music and Dance. The evening saw the disciple of Ustad Bhimsen Joshi, Upendra Bhatji who performed Hindustani Classical and Shree Nandini Krishna who performed Bharatnatyam.
Upendra Bhat is an acclaimed singer of the Kirana Gharana. He has been under the vigilant training of Shree Bhimsen Joshi since the last three decades. Bhat has been gifted with a well-seasoned, sonorous and pliant voice. His classical renditions are marked by a systematic development of a raga structure, expressive singing and powerful taans. He also excels in singing other musical genres like ghazals, thumris, bhajans and light musical pieces. From the beginning to the conclusion of his performance, Bhat kept his audience captivated.
Nandini Krishna is the senior disciple of Late Kalaimamani Guru Sri T.K. Mahalingam Pillai. In 2004, she was deputed to Bali, Indonesia, through the ICCR, as the first dancer-teacher in Bharata Natyam, for the newly opened Indian Cultural Centre there. She trained and presented Balinese students in Bharata Natyam performances, and for the International Bali Arts Festival. Recently, Krishna has launched ‘ ArtFeat’ that is promoting Nritya Uphaar – the Gift of Dance, in a series of workshops, in classical dance.
Upendraji started with Raag Puriya as a tribute to his Guruji Bhimsen Joshi. His performance was heavenly and certainly transcends one into a divine realm. He expressed and urged the audiences "Never to doubt on God and Guru as they are one!"
He concluded his performance with a wonderful Raag Mala.
Nandini Krishna started her dance performance with Shiva Stuti and Devi Stuti. The dance that was most graceful depicted how Mahadev is most powerful. After that she danced to ‘ Pancha Bhoota’ - beyond matter and revealed the inner essence of all the five elements that makes the entire universe and human beings.
Nandini’s dance depicted how the little seed grows in Earth's womb, and how water cleans everything with its touch and wherever it is, water is same. Her dance depicted Air as the source of Prana, the life in every being in this planet.
Nandini then danced to the tracks of ‘ Chaliye Kunjan’, a dance depicting the love of Shrimati Radharani and Shree Krishna Bhagwan in Shree Dham Vrindavan. Here she depicted how Radharani wanted to spend sweet nothings with Krishna, the performance was enriching and it made the audience's eyes wet.
Nandini's performance concluded with Tilana in praise of Mumbadevi. This was one evening; every Indian would have felt doubly proud to belong to such a rich cultural nation.

2011 saw a grand start of a new year, a new decade and a new era altogether. Mumbaikars lived up to its spirit with some droplets of spirit, while Munni and Sheila made them dance and boogie the night away.
As the New Year 2011 unfurled its Red Carpet, the festive season was upon the party animals and every corner of the nation was filled with merriment and joy. Aamby Valley City at Lonavala had transformed into an enchanting winter wonderland to celebrate the New Year’s Eve. It was one rocking and rollicking affair with sensuous Malaika Arora Khan who performed to some of her biggest chartbusters including the biggest blockbuster hit track Munni Badnaam Hui. Vishal Shekhar too belted out his grooviest best on the New Year’s Eve at the valley.
The masquerade ball mystery further unfolded itself in to the scintillating performance by Sonal Chauhan on songs like Sheila Ki Jawani and more, where as DJ Amann Nagpal spinned some foot-tapping music to keep the adrenaline rushes going. The power-packed performances continued all night long with live acts by international illusionist and live performances.
Munni was dancing in Aamby Valley and here in Mumbai, Bollywood’s bombshell and the snake woman seduced the crowd at Hotel Sahara Star. The New Year Eve unveiled the seductive queen Mallika Sherwat on the dance floor grooving to a vibrant mix of foot-tapping numbers that included her super-hit Mayya Mayya and others.
The night was named as Seduction 2011 where Mallika’s sensational act scorched up the stage, while DJ Hiren played some foot-tapping music to make the crowd get crazy in the dance floor. The night performances included the fashionable Mugdha Ghodse who danced in tracks of Fashion Ka Hai Yeh Jalwa and others. There were performances by Marisha Parekh along with some international dancers.
On the New Year’s Eve, Mumbai did party in style with bubbly champagne and festive cocktails, while the dream girls rocked the night and countdown to 2011. The spirit of Mumbai lived with the droplets of spirit that the party-goers took; hence the roads were all unfilled on January 1 as Mumbaikars went through an aftermath of the spirit. We wish 2011 will take its toll as it stepped into a new year, a decade and a new era altogether.

Salman Khan, King Khan, Hrithik Khan, Shilpa Shetty and the list goes on, spent the start of the year in Dubai, one of the most-sorted holiday destinations in the world. Indian origin Muthu Krishna is one of the most celebrated fashion photographers of Dubai who contributes for the Gulf News, spends January 26, his birthday with his Mumbai’s fashionista friends in Dubai. Muthu on his special day tells Sourendra Kumar Das how this season the roads of Dubai were filled with the B-Town celebrities.
What an incredible display is to watch the most spectacular fireworks on the world’s tallest building Burj Khalifa as it rings in 2011 with unprecedented celebrations. It was indeed a celebration that elevated city to the league of the earth’s most sought-after destinations for celebrations in this new decade.
Muthu Krishna hailing from Bengaluru was the lucky one to ring in the New Year 2011 at the top of the tallest tower in the world. “I watched the fireworks from the top of the 828 meter high skyscraper while spectators around the city watched the fireworks light the night sky of January 1, 2011with the landmark of Burj Khalifa in the foreground,” said Muthu, one of the most celebrated fashion photographers of Dubai who contributes Gulf News.
Photography has been a passion for the Indian boy who has been working in Dubai as an architect since 2007. “Moving out of India gave me a wider platform to pursue my interest and capture images of everyday life, portraits, landscapes, abstracts, architecture and celebrations,’ revealed Muthu.
Khalifa was opened in New Year’s Day in 2010; just it completed its first anniversary. “The skyscraper symbolizes growth during the tough economic times globally and the arrival of Dubai to the world stage,” feels Muthu.
The New Year’s Eve gala at Khalifa has positioned Dubai as one of the must-visit destinations to celebrate new beginnings. “The New Year Fireworks is one of the finest spectacles in the world and in forthcoming years, Dubai will be the place visitors from across the world will choose to celebrate New Year. In fact this year a host of A-listers from India ringed the New Year in Dubai,” said Mohamed Alabbar, developer of Khalifa in a telephonic conversation.
Shah Rukh Khan was joined by his wife Gauri Khan and a group of other Bollywood friends who celebrated the New Year at Palm Jumeirah which is one of the three islands called the Palm Islands that extends into the Persian Gulf. “Hrihik Roshan, along with wife Susanne Khan, director Karan Johar, lawyer Kaajal Anand, Chunky Pandey, Arjun Rampal also joined in. King Khan threw an extravagant party in his home on man-made island in Dubai,” revealed Muthu.
It seemed half the crowd from the Tinsel town went to Dubai as Salman too stayed back and celebrated his 45th birthday with King Khan. The hot Sheela too dropped in to spend time with the beefy ex-boyfriend and partied away until early hours. However, Katz has since denied this. Father Salim Khan, mother Salma, sisters Arpita, Alvira and brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri were also included in Sallu’s party!
“King Khan’s party had half of Bollywood flying in, including Zayed Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, designer and shopaholic Anna Singh who could not wait to hit the shops. Khan was the last to come over and looked like he desperately needed some good sleep,” Muthu tells us.
And while the box-office superstar has been lying low, Hrithik and Suzanne were gaga about the fireworks at Khalifa. “I could not recognize who this handsome man mincing about the pool was, until I jerked off my dose of champagne and released it was Bollywood’s heartthrob Hrithik Roshan. He did take a long walk around the pool while I greeted him and then he posed for photographs. Hrithik said he has already been to Ski Dubai where he was teaching his sons Hridaan and Hrehaan how to make it downhill without breaking any bones,” tells an awestruck Muthu.
Also hanging out at Khalifa were tower residents Shilpa Shetty and husband Raj Kundra who after bringing in the New Year are planning an anniversary party in Dubai. Muthu who has his birthday on January 6 is planning to celebrate the same with his friends in Dubai with a grand celebration; there are many of his fashion journalists and B-Town socialites friends who have already boarded the early morning flight from Mumbai to make it to his birthday party in the evening. “One of my very close friends from Mumbai is unable to join me this time, so I wish to celebrate my birthday in a grand way once more in Goa with him end of this month,” said the birthday boy.
So, in 2011 Dubai has kick-started to be one of the most sorted destinations for the B-Town celebrities. Next time you think of spending your honeymoon or for an amazing holiday with loved ones, do visit the city that is taking away all the Mumbaites for a glittery ride!

I skipped a party and went for a special screening of The Warrior's Way. There are couple of things that seem not to work in the film, while there are also many things in the movie worth respecting. Watching the directorial debut of Sngmoo Lee, the audience would be amazed the way the movie is made.
Jang Doon-guns play Yang, the greatest warrior of his clan who slaughters all the members of a rival clan, except for a baby girl.
The film attempts too hard to be Kung Fu Hustle, with the warrior coming to a village where everything around him happens in madcap screwball comedy beats. The movie wears its influences on its sleeves proudly, but somehow the lighter moments fails quite obviously.

Cafes are now the norm with most entrepreneurs going in for cafes. So when host Krishna Tamang, the man behind Chinagate Group of Restaurants, launched a new cafe, it invariably drew attention and a huge crowd of celebs, media persons and other guests who thronged to celebrate with Krishna Tamang. The soft launch of Red Ant Café turned out to be a grand celebration.
While the guests knew that the café’s décor would surely have a lot of red colour, which is Krishna’s favourite, they were stunned by the quaint brick walls, the pop-hued lighting, and the square shaped bar with the surreal orange glow. But there was more.
In keeping with Krishna Tamang’s style of introducing some fun element into all his functions, the launch of Red Ant café also saw the opening party of Four Play, a comedy drama adapted by Vandana Sanjnani Khattar. Those who enjoyed the laugh riot besides host Krishna Tamang included Udita Goswami, Payal Rohatgi, Aseem Merchant, Nasir , Shakti and Sai Anand, Mohit and Chhabi Mittal Hussain, Akshay Kapoor, Gaurav Chopra, Mouni Roy, Siddharth Kannan, Asif Bhamla, Ashok and Madhu Chopra, sufi singer Sahil Multy Khan, Narayani Shastri among others.
After a hearty laugh, the guests were treated to a sumptuous fare of exotic dishes, by chef Rashmiraj Rego. Exciting multi-cuisine fare of the likes of parmesan tuiles with cream cheese, enokitake mushrooms with chicken, goat cheese and walnut bruschetta, leeks and gorgonzola melted on sweet potato, philly cheese on eye bread and a spread of over 40 mouth-watering dishes were relished by the guests.
Who else could be a more apt brand-fit as Four Play sponsor than Provogue, the young, vibrant and trendy brand? And who else could be a perfect host than Krishna Tamang’s haute café, Red Ant!

This week it was better for me to attend a theatre than to party as Peter Shaffer’s Equus that was enacted by Richard Griffiths and Daniel Radcliffe in the leading roles in London was actually performed by Thespo at Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai.
Young director Daniel D’Souza tells the story of a psychiatrist, who is treating a young man having a patho...logical, religious and sexual fascination with horses. In the process he is forced to take a look at his own life and his duty to society as a psychiatrist.
The play, written in 1973, takes its roots from a crime involving a 17-year-old who blinded six horses in a small town near London. Peter Shaffer wrote the play as a fictional account of what might have caused the incident after he heard about it from a friend. It is said he did this without having any details of the incident.
Daniel definitely has long way to go as an actor and director. This was definitely a better option to skip a party and go for the play.
Some older International performances of Equus by Daniel Radcliffe:
