After the dresses and gowns, flares and ruffles, kurtis and Anarkalis, our glam-dolls appear to have been caught in the six-yard-tangle. Almost as if out from some fantastic fairytale, the Indian beauties can look beautiful anytime, anywhere in a saree, and the shimmering page 3 regulars apparently are aware of the fact.
In a surprising coincidence of sorts, most Bollywood beauties have been spotted wearing the exotic garment on more occasions than one! Especially with ace designers like Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Manish Malhotra, Neeta Lulla, Vikram Phadnis etc adding more beauty to it each time, there is never a dearth of chic saree-clad ladies in the glamour industry.
The couple of months that went by saw not just established, but also young actresses, even budding starlets donning the six-yards; and if you are one of the many who love to keep a close eye on celeb fashion, you know we're talking about Deepika Padukone and her much-hyped Rohit Bal saree at the Cannes red carpet. All of 24, Deepika still carried the saree with the elegance and aplomb of a seasoned star, and the stunning sheer off-white and red saree with intricate detailing only added to the former super-model's beauty. At the same event, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan effortlessly carried a stunning creation by her favourite designer - Sabyasachi, whose bottle-green garment with extremely detailed embellishments and a hint of velvet made Ash simply dazzle!
Celebrity stylist Jaya Anand says, "Top-notch actresses and socialites have always known the beauty of a saree, but it has become more pronounced of late; only the styling and patterns keep changing with the times. Like gota work; kundan and crystal embellishments are very popular these days, and fabrics like cotton is back in vogue with earthy look making a comeback." Jaya, who has styled popular stars on Balaji Telefilms soaps, says that sarees were never out of fashion, and this can be witnessed in any age-old Bollywood clip. "It has always been the most sensuous form of clothing for women. Who can forget the beautiful Sridevi, Dimple, Madhuri flaunting their beauty in simple chiffon sarees?" she says, adding, "Now finally with Bollywood going 'West', sarees have found recognition everywhere and is the first choice of outfits by even young actresses. I think it is high time our sarees got their due! I am glad Deepika and Ash wore sarees at such a grand international event."
Designer Rupali Gujrathi, who's signature style lies in appliqué and Swarovski-studded sarees, says that 'cut sarees' are very popular among actresses; these multi-layered garments give a whole new look to the wearer apart from making one look slimmer and more stylish.
At the IIFA 2010 press meet in Colombo last week, Jaqueline Fernandez was seen wearing a lovely white and pink traditional Sri Lankan saree, Kareena Kapoor was seen promoting '3 Idiots' in a stunning traditional black and gold chanderi saree, Vidya Balan has been spotted wearing an out-and-out earthy look with warm tone Sabyasachi sarees at numerous occasions, Ash even wore a complex pattern, multi-hue Sabyasachi saree at her Oprah appearance...these and many such celeb looks have promoted, and the garment has gotten only more popular.
So much so, even stars from the West have patronised the garment! Remember Elizabeth hurley, Naomi Campbell, Cameron Diaz, Ana Kournikova, Serena and Venus Williams?
Sarees are no more the traditional boring garment, worn with a basic simple blouse and saved for auspicious occasions. Bollywood and television stars have shown us numerous ways to make a simple saree look extremely glamourous, sexy and elegant, all at the same time!
