This is one of the many questions that's been haunting many aspiring male models in the country. We currently have a couple of fashion weeks going on, but hardly any designer has put up a separate line for men's wear.
Everyone is busy showcasing lehengas, saris, gowns and dresses for women. Numerous fashion weeks have come up with wide range and variety for women's line. But there is hardly anything for men!
The recently-concluded Delhi Couture Week (DCW) had a lot on offer for women, but are men not getting married this year? It was only designer Manish Malhotra who showcased few men's collections at the event. No male models were roped in for DCW and it is believed that Manish himself got 10 male models to walk the ramp for him. The reason that the designers sorted for not having men’s wear was lack of time.
After DCW, its Mumbai's much awaited Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2010 that is following the league. Usually LFW has its third day of the five day long fashion festival dedicated to men. But this time the men’s day is not happening and hence no fresh male models have been taken in.
The season had its female model auditions on July 21 in Mumbai and four fresh and promising faces were selected. But male models, who were waiting for the auditions, were left disheartened because they won't get a chance to display their talent!
A source informs, "Yes menswear day is not happening this season and hence male models are not required. The organisers have their own male models who will be walking the ramp in-case any designer is keen to show both men's and women's collection."
This year LFW has received number of applications from menswear designers but organisers are not very happy with them. The source adds, "It seems they will get a raw deal this year. The organisers are not very keen to go ahead with the designers from whom they received the applications. It’s not that the fashion week will not have men’s collection, but an entire day dedicated to men's collection will be missed for sure."
Models who were looking to make quick money have no words to express their grudges. Alekh Anand, who had come all the way from Delhi, says, "I tried at DCW, but in vain. I was confident that I would make it for LFW, but this news is very disappointing. I wanted to make some quick money and also applied for leave from office."
Rishi Chugh from Mumbai says, "I had a very genuine reason to participate in LFW and I am in desperate need of money. This is the first year when designers are not showcasing more men's collection. I will meet designers personally to see if they can take me in."
Now many of these models have pinned their hopes on upcoming Van Heusen India Men's Fashion Week. The three day event will happen from August 27-29, at The Grand, Vasant Kunj, and will have widest range of men’s wear and accessories under one roof. Many renowned names including Manish Malhotra will be seen showcasing their collections at the event.
Mohsin Khan a model who will soon leave for Delhi says, "I will make sure that I walk the ramp for Men's Fashion Week. This year the situation for male models is too bad and no major fashion event is happening after Men's Week."
Hopefully the deserving candidates manage to crack the deal at Van Heusen India Men's Fashion Week and the scenario is not the same next year.
