The desire and attitude to look good prevail all over the world. India is no exception to this. But what makes it different here in India is the unquenchable thirst to look fairer. The serious desire to have fair skin beats even the desire to look good at times!
Numerous cosmetic companies have been encashing on this Indian desire since ages now, limiting it not just to women, but putting in the "fairness thought" in the minds of men too! Top actors and star celebrities have been seen endorsing men’s fairness products since some time now.
So much is the drive to be fair-skinned, that it is no longer limited to the visible parts! Taking this fair skin obsession to a whole new level, the latest in this area is companies coming up with fairness products for the private parts!
It has been quite a topic of debate and caused an outrage, even in the Rajya Sabha very recently, when a company launched an advertisement for their fairness cream for the private parts.
A CPI-M member raised the issue and the presiding officer said that the government should take note of her contention. Raising the issue in zero hour, Communist Party of India-Marxist member T.N. Seema said the advertisement pointed to the manufacturer's "perversion", adding that this advertisement shows graphic details of a female body in a demeaning manner. It shows the perversion of the company.
It also demanded that the advertisement be condemned, and intervention be sought of the information and broadcasting ministry and that there should be action against the advertisers as well as the company for "portraying women in a derogatory manner".
While many are still supporting and all for the fair skin fascination, many also feel that this mania has gone a bit too far already. It will now remain to be seen what next level it reaches.
